How to record your story over the phone FAQs about audio recording Can I record more than once? I’ve finished recording, but I don’t see my text. How long does the transcription take? I didn’t receive my phone call to record — how do I troubleshoot? Can I edit the copy that was added to my story? Can I record in another language? Can I listen to the recording?

In addition to writing a story, there are three ways to voice-record stories over the phone. You can use any phone, even a landline.

Story Calls: tell your story over the phone, and we’ll transcribe it into your memoir exactly as you told it.

Magic Interviews: we’ll ask follow-up questions over a phone call to bring your story to life, then transform the conversation into a story.

Family Calls: include a loved one on the call so they can ask questions and share memories with you. We’ll add a cleaned-up transcript of your conversation to your memoir, preserving both of your voices.

Access to audio features will depend on your plan. You can upgrade at any time during your plan year. Learn more or upgrade.

How to record your story over the phone

1. For all voice recording options, first go to your Storyworth account and open the story you want to record from your list of questions.

2. Then, click on “Talk”:

For Story Calls

1. Choose “Record it myself”

2. Type in your phone number and click “Request a call”

4. You should receive the phone call within moments. When you answer, you’ll hear an automated prompt with your question. You can begin recording at the beep. Hang up when you are finished.

5. The transcription will appear automatically in your story as soon as it is ready. This usually only takes a few seconds.

For Magic Interviews

1. Choose ‘’Get interviewed”

2. Type in your phone number and click “Request interview”

3. You should receive the phone call within moments. When you answer, you’ll hear an automated prompt with your question.

4. As you share your story, Storyworth will ask follow-up questions that you can answer or skip.

5. When you’ve shared what you want, just end the call

6. The conversation will be transformed into a narrative and added to your story as soon as it is ready. This usually only takes a moment.

For Family Calls

1. Choose “Talk with a loved one”

2. Type in both of your phone numbers and click “Start call”

3. You’ll both receive a phone call within minutes.

4. When you answer, you’ll hear an automated prompt with your question.

5. Your loved one can ask questions and share memories with you.

6. When you’ve shared what you want, just end the call

7. A cleaned-up transcript of your conversation will be added to your story as soon as it is ready. This usually only takes a moment.

FAQs about audio recording

Can I record more than once?

Right now, it’s only possible to record once per story. If you make a mistake with a recording, you can delete it and start over with a new recording.

To delete the recording, click “Edit” off to the right of your story, and click “Delete” in the bottom right corner. Refresh the page to see the microphone icon and try the recording again.

I’ve finished recording, but I don’t see my text. How long does the transcription take?

This depends on how long your recording is. A twenty-minute recording should only take about a minute. If it’s been several minutes, please feel free to reach out to our support team at hello@storyworth.com for additional help.

I didn’t receive my phone call to record — how do I troubleshoot?

Your phone may be sending the call directly to voicemail. Double-check your phone settings to make sure it allows unknown numbers. Alternatively, you can request a call to a different phone number (spouse, landline, etc.)

Can I edit the copy that was added to my story?

Yes! Just click anywhere on the story to edit or add to it at any time. You can also add photos with captions.

Can I record in another language?

Yes, but available languages depend on the type of voice call you choose. To see languages by call type, click here.

Can I listen to the recording?

Yes, you can listen to the recording on the website.  Hover over the text of the story to see the recording near the top.  Click the triangle play button to listen to it.

You can also download the recording by clicking the 3 dots and choosing Download, like this:
